Chapter 10

Deceiving Jacob met his match with father in law Leban who promised to give him Rachel and after working seven years gave him Leah. God blessed Laban because of Jacob; then Jacob made a deal to take streaked, speckled or spotted animals for his wages.

(Gen 31:9; The Lord said to Jacob, “Return to the land of your fathers and to your relatives. I will be with you. So Jacob sent a message for Rachel and Leah to come to the field where his flocks were. There he said to them, “I can tell that your father’s attitude toward me has changed, but the God of my father has been with me. You know that I’ve worked for your father as hard as I could, but your father has humiliated me and changed my wages ten times. But God has not permitted him to do me any harm. If he said, ‘The speckled animals will be your wage,’ then the entire flock gave birth to speckled offspring. But if he said, ‘The streaked animals will be your wage,’ then the entire flock gave birth to streaked offspring. In this way God has snatched away your father’s livestock and given them to me.)

Gen 31:10-13; “Once during breeding season I saw in a dream that the male goats mating with the flock were streaked, speckled, and spotted. In the dream the angel of God said to me, ‘Jacob!’ ‘Here I am!’ I replied. Then he said, ‘Observe that all the male goats mating with the flock are streaked, speckled, or spotted, for I have observed all that Laban has done to you. I am the God of Bethel, where you anointed the sacred stone and made a vow to Me. Now leave this land immediately and return to your native land.’”

Gen 31:14- Then Rachel and Leah replied to him, “Do we still have any portion or inheritance in our father’s house? Hasn’t he treated us like foreigners? He not only sold us, but completely wasted the money paid for us! Surely all the wealth that God snatched away from our father belongs to us and to our children. So now do everything God has told you.”

God’s calling out a predestined by promise people “to live believing IN faith and be a people of His covenant promises began with Abraham.” It’s His unchanging way to grow people of faith , “His family, His church.” Abraham was called to go out from his relatives and live as a foreigner in the land, “in the world but not of the world.” God commanding “walk before Me, be blameless and I’ll confirm My covenant with you.” (See Gen 17:1) These blessings and promises were passed to predestined Isaac, then Jacob who was chosen over his brother before birth.

The deliverer, promise keeping Lord God is

None other than the promised Messiah, “Jesus.”

Before the flood on through Jacob, Joseph, Moses and David’s time, only the called recognized the Lord God Jesus.

(John 8:19-20; Then they began asking Jesus, “Who is your father?” Jesus answered, “You do not know either Me or My Father. If you knew Me you would know My Father too.” (Jesus spoke these words near the offering box while He was teaching in the temple courts. No one seized Him because His time had not yet come.)

(John 10:14-18; “I am the good shepherd. I know My own and My own know Me – just as the Father knows Me and I know the Father – and I lay down My life for the sheep. (16) I have other sheep that do not come from this sheepfold. I must bring them too, and they will listen to My voice, so that there will be one flock and one shepherd. (Other sheep? People before - after the flood, end of this age and the millennial age.) This is why the Father loves Me – because I lay down My life, so that I may take it back again. No one takes it away from Me, but I lay it down of My own free will. I have the authority to lay it down, and I have the authority to take it back again. This commandment I received from my Father.”)

As Jesus lives. so will Believers In

(John 3:16-17; “For this is the way God ‘The Father’ loved the world: He gave His One and only Son, so that everyone who believes IN Him will not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world should be saved through Him.”)

(John 14:18-24; “I will not abandon you as orphans, I will come to you. In a little while the world will not see Me any longer, but you ’Believers’ will see Me; because I live, you will live too. You will know at that time that I am in My Father and you are in Me and I am in you. (21) The person who has My commandments and obeys them is the one who loves Me. The one who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and will reveal myself to him.”

(John 14:22-24; “Lord,” Judas (not Judas Iscariot) said, “what has happened that You are going to reveal yourself to us and not to the world?” Jesus replied, “If anyone loves Me, he will obey My word, and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and take up residence with him. The person who does not love Me does not obey My words. And the word you hear is not Mine, but the Father’s who sent Me.”)

Jesus’ good news hasn’t changed, not different now than when Abraham was called to go out from his relatives and live as a foreigner in the land, “in the world but not of the world.” God’s command Abraham, “walk before Me, be blameless and I’ll confirm My covenant with you.”

If you’ve been studying for some time you know that this world is totally deceived, “all except God’s called out Saints - Elect.” Jesus said, “be careful! I’ve told you everything ahead of time.” Matt 24:15-29.)

Like Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, God’s Elect are foreknown. He reveals foreknowledge to His chosen as He did Isaiah, regarding Cyrus, who would be born much later than Isaiah‘s writing.. Cyrus learned of Isaiah’s prophecy.

Isaiah 45:1-8; This is what the Lord says to His chosen one, “to Cyrus” whose right hand I hold in order to subdue nations before him, and disarm kings, to open doors before him,

so gates remain unclosed: “I will go before you and level mountains. Bronze doors I will shatter and iron bars I will hack through. I will give you hidden treasures, riches stashed away in secret places, so you may recognize that I am the Lord, the one who calls you by name, the God of Israel. For the sake of my servant Jacob, Israel, my chosen one, I call you by name and give you a title of respect, even though you do not recognize Me. I am the Lord, I have no peer, there’s no God but Me.

I arm you for battle, even though you do not recognize Me. I do this so people will recognize from east to west that there is no God but Me; I am the Lord, I have no peer. I am the One who forms light and creates darkness; the One who brings about peace and creates calamity. I am the Lord, who accomplishes all these things.

(8-16; “O sky, rain down from above! Let the clouds send down showers of deliverance! Let the earth absorb it so salvation may grow, and deliverance may sprout up along with it. I, the Lord, create it.” One who argues with his creator is in grave danger, one who is like a mere shard among the other shards on the ground!

The clay should not say to the potter, “What in the world are you doing? Your work lacks skill!” Danger awaits one who says to his father, “What in the world are you fathering?” and to his mother, “What in the world are you bringing forth?” This is what the Lord says, the Holy One of Israel, the One who formed him, concerning things to come: “How dare you question Me about My children! How dare you tell Me what to do with the work of My own hands! I made the earth, I created the people who live on it. It was Me – My hands stretched out the sky, I give orders to all the heavenly lights. It is Me – I stir him up and commission him; I will make all his ways level. He will rebuild My city; he will send My exiled people home, but not for a price or a bribe,” says the Lord who commands armies.

Believe God, He knows us.

Consider the terminology Jesus used when speaking to the Pharisees and Sadducees. How would Jesus address today’s schooled clergy? Other than disagreements regarding the resurrection and angels, the Pharisees and Sadducees did believe God was creator. They did look to the fathers “calling Abraham their father. However rather than looking to God in the spirit of love, they looked to the law in a worshipful fashion. Made their own rules regarding the Sabbath , were prideful about charitable giving and the like. Jesus told them.

(Matt 6:1-2’ “Be careful not to display your righteousness merely to be seen by people. Otherwise you have no reward with your Father in heaven. Thus whenever you do charitable giving, do not blow a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in synagogues and on streets so that people will praise them. I tell you the truth, they have their reward.”) These were teaching people to worship in vain.”)

(Matt 23:34-36; “But woe to you, experts in the law and you Pharisees, hypocrites! You keep locking people out of the kingdom of heaven! For you neither enter nor permit those trying to enter to go in.”)

(Matt 23:34-36; “For this reason I am sending you prophets and wise men and experts in the law, some of whom you will kill and crucify, and some you will flog in your synagogues and pursue from town to town, so that on you will come all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah son of Barachiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar. I tell you the truth, this generation will be held responsible for all these things!”)

Consider Abel and how his blood still speaks and that Jesus’ followers will be persecuted. It’s through God’s gifted covenant with Israel, His loving plans through His Son Jesus that He is saving this world.

(1Peter 1:10-12; Concerning this salvation, the prophets who predicted the grace that would come to you searched and investigated carefully. They probed into what person or time the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating when he testified beforehand about the sufferings appointed for Christ and His subsequent glory. They were shown that they were serving not themselves but you, in regard to the things now announced to you through those who proclaimed the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven – things angels long to catch a glimpse of.
