Book Chapter 20

The result of Satan’s deliberate disobedience is disbandment and ultimately eternal death. He’s aware “deceiving people will ultimately cause them to hate him when his self serving character is revealed.” People deliberately disobeying after “truth is revealed” may not be able to repent. Only God knows the degree of understanding revealed to each. Disobedience not turned from “repented of” after Jesus’ truth is revealed will ultimately result in eternal death. Allow Paul’s teaching.

(Romans 5:12-16; “So then, just as sin entered the world through one man ‘Adam’ and death through sin and so death spread to all people because all sinned – for before the law was given, sin was in the world, but there is no accounting for sin “explanation of” when there is no law. (14) Yet death reigned from Adam until Moses even over those who did not sin in the same way that Adam (who is a type of the coming One) transgressed. But the gracious gift is not like the transgression. For if the many died through the transgression of the one man, how much more did the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the One man Jesus Christ multiply to the many! (16) And the gift is not like the one who sinned. For judgment, resulting from the one transgression, led to condemnation, but the gracious gift from the many failures led to justification.”

Rom 5:17; “For if, by the transgression of the one man, ‘Adam’ death reigned through the one, how much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ!”

Rom 5:18-19; Consequently, just as condemnation for all people came through one transgression, so too through the One righteous act (“Jesus shedding His blood for the remission of sin.”) came righteousness leading to life for all people. (19) For just as through the disobedience of the one man ‘Adam’ many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of One man  ‘Jesus’ many ‘who believe IN’ will be made righteous.”

(Rom 5:20-21; “Now the law came in so that the transgression may increase, but where sin increased, grace multiplied all the more, so that just as sin reigned in death, so also grace will reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”)

Satan attempts to camouflage Re-Creator, Creator, Deliverer and the resurrection in whom is life, “Jesus.”

(Rom 6:15-20; What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Absolutely not! Do you not know that if you present yourselves as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey, either of sin resulting in death, or obedience resulting in righteousness? But thanks be to God that though you were slaves to sin, you obeyed from the heart that pattern of teaching you were entrusted to, and having been freed from sin, you became enslaved to righteousness. (I am speaking in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh.) For just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness leading to sanctification. (20) For when you were slaves of sin, you were free with regard to righteousness.

(Rom 6:21-23; “So what benefit did you then reap from those things that you are now ashamed of? For the end of those things is death. But now, freed from sin and enslaved to God, you have your benefit leading to sanctification, and the end is eternal life. For the payoff ’result’  of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”) Satan wants people believing they have eternal life at birth!

(Rom 7:13-20; “Did that which is good, ‘the law’ then, become death to me? Absolutely not! But sin, so that it would be shown to be sin, produced death in me through what is good, so that through the commandment sin would become utterly sinful. For we know that the law is spiritual – but I am unspiritual, sold into slavery to sin. (15) For I don’t understand what I am doing. For I do not do what I want – instead, I do what I hate. But if I do what I don’t want, I agree that the law is good. But now it is no longer me doing it, but sin that lives in me. (18) For I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my flesh. For I want to do the good, but I cannot do it. For I do not do the good I want, but I do the very evil I do not want! (20) Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer me doing it but sin that lives in me.”) God gifts believers IN with the desire and the effort, when we fail the spirit of truth leads to a turning, “repentance.” When we’re recipients of His spirit “we’re considered as NOT in the flesh but in the spirit.) (See Phil 2:13, in part it reads, “One who gives desire and effort is God.”

(Rom 7:21-25; “So, I find the law that when I want to do good, evil is present with me. For I delight in the law of God in my inner being. But I see a different law in my members waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that is in my members. Wretched man that I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? (25) Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.”)

(Rom 8:1-4; “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the life-giving Spirit in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and death. (3) For God ‘the Father’ achieved what the law could not do because it was weakened through the flesh. By sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and concerning sin, He ‘Jesus’ condemned sin in the flesh, so that the righteous requirement of the law may be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.”) OUTLOOK IS THE DIFFERENCE!

(Rom 8:5-11; “For those who live according to the flesh have their outlook shaped by the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit have their outlook shaped by the things of the Spirit. (6) For the outlook of the flesh is death, but the outlook of the Spirit is life and peace, because the outlook of the flesh is hostile to God, for it ‘the flesh’ does not submit to the law of God, nor is it able to do so. (8) Those who are in the flesh cannot please God. You, ’believers IN’ however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, this person does not belong to Him. (10) But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is your life because of ‘Jesus’’ righteousness. (11) Moreover if the Spirit of the One who raised Jesus from the dead lives in you, the One who raised Christ from the dead will also make your mortal bodies alive through His Spirit who lives in you.”)

(Rom 8:12-17; “So then, brothers and sisters, we ‘believers’ are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh (for if you live according to the flesh, you will die), but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body you will live. (14) For all who are led by the Spirit of God are the sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of slavery leading again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption, by who we cry, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit itself bears witness to our spirit that we are God’s children. (17) And if children, then heirs (namely, heirs of God and also fellow heirs with Christ) – if indeed we suffer with Him so we may also be glorified with Him.”) Overcoming fleshly pulls inherited from Adam is only possible through gifted believing IN Jesus’ faithful serving as the Lamb of God. The Creator of life giving His life!

(1John 5:13-17; “I have written these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life. And this is the confidence that we have before Him: that whenever we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us in regard to whatever we ask, then we know that we have the requests that we have asked from Him. (16) If anyone sees his fellow Christian committing a sin not resulting in death, he should ask, and God will grant life to the person who commits a sin not resulting in death. There is a sin resulting in death. I do not say that he should ask about that. All unrighteousness is sin, but there is sin not resulting in death.”) (Those weaknesses Paul confessed to having!)

(1John 5:18-21; “We know that everyone fathered by God “recipients of His spirit” does not ‘purposely’ sin, but God protects the one He has fathered, and the evil one cannot touch him. We know that we are from God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one. (20) And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us insight to know Him who is true, and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This One is the true God and eternal life. (21) Little children, guard yourselves from idols.”)

Everyone inherited a self serving nature from Adam, its self preservation, desires self subscribed beliefs, ways and views. From that inherited nature, people of particular religions, race or skin color, develop biases regarding politics, legal issues etc. Satan blinds, encourages division and the worshiping of imaginary gods as each see fit. True to James’ defining words about our inherited nature. (Review James 4:1-3) When people yield to their own intellect, bias attitudes develop, issues of no consequence take hold and become friends to the demonic, thus hostility toward God’s Way. Such is spiritual adultery. Our Lord’s brother, “James” explains.

(James 4:4-10; ‘Spiritual’ Adulterers, do you not know that friendship with the world means hostility toward God? So whoever decides to be the world’s friend makes himself God’s enemy. “Or do you think the scripture means nothing when it says, “The spirit that God caused to live within us has an envious yearning”? But God gives greater grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud, but He gives grace to the humble.” So submit to God. But resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and make your hearts pure, you double-minded. Grieve, mourn, and weep. Turn your laughter into mourning and your joy into despair. Humble yourselves before the Lord and He will exalt you.”) (Remember Jesus’ words? “we can’t love God and money, we either hate the one or love the other?) This is Paul’s theme in his letters also.

(Philippians 2:19-21; “Now I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you soon, so that I too may be encouraged by hearing news about you. For there is no one here like him who will readily demonstrate his deep concern for you. Others are busy with their own concerns, not those of Jesus Christ.”) Without God’s spiritual guidance people fall in the clutch of self preservation above all else.

(Phil 2:22-28; “But you know his “Timothy’s” qualifications, that like a son working with his father, he served with me in advancing the gospel. So I hope to send him as soon as I know more about my situation, though I am confident in the Lord that I too will be coming to see you soon. But for now I have considered it necessary to send Epaphroditus to you. For he is my brother, coworker and fellow soldier, and your messenger and minister to me in my need. Indeed, he greatly missed all of you and was distressed because you heard that he had been ill. In fact he became so ill that he nearly died. But God showed mercy to him – and not to him only, but also to me – so that I would not have grief on top of grief. Therefore I am all the more eager to send him, so that when you see him again you can rejoice and I can be free from anxiety. So welcome him in the Lord with great joy, and honor people like him, since it was because of the work of Christ that he almost died. He risked his life so that he could make up for your inability to serve me.”)

Compare these apostolic time to the times we live. Likely little of the New Testament was in circulation and certainly not Jesus’ Revelations to John. Scattered congregations depended on Jesus’ apostles and those sent. The apostles primary concerns were that Christians stay true to God’s Way. Its obvious, the strong always enjoyed lording over the naive and false teachers infiltrated God’s churches.

Jesus revealed and John wrote; “To the angel of the church in Smyrna write: “This is the solemn pronouncement of the One who is the first and the last, the one who was dead, but came to life: ‘I know the distress you are suffering and your poverty (but you are rich). I also know the slander against you by those who call themselves Jews “Christian” and really are not, but are a synagogue of Satan.” Rev 2:8-9)

Jesus used similar words to His church at Philadelphia. (See Rev 3:9) (Jesus said, “Watch out that you are not misled. For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am He “Christ” and, ‘The time is near.’ Do not follow them!” Luke 21:8) Likewise Paul warned the Philippians.

(Philippians 3:1-6; (““Finally, my brothers and sisters, rejoice in the Lord! To write this again is no trouble to me, and it is a safeguard for you. Beware of the dogs, beware of the evil workers, beware of those who mutilate the flesh! For we “Christians” are the circumcision, the ones who worship by the Spirit of God, exult in Christ Jesus, and do not rely on human credentials – though mine “credentials” too are significant. If someone thinks he has good reasons to put confidence in human credentials, I have more: I was circumcised on the eighth day, from the people of Israel and the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews. I lived according to the law as a Pharisee. In my zeal for God, I persecuted the church. According to the righteousness stipulated in the law I was blameless.””)

True to the inherited fleshly nature in people; false teachers were infiltrating the churches and boasting of their credentials. Few understood the significance of “circumcision of the heart - mind.” Few understand it today.
